The Leadership Empowerment and Entrepreneurial Development (LEED) has held its first students’ leaders forum, 2014, at the Ghana International Trade Fair, La. The forum brought together great entrepreneurs such as Mr. Reginald Laryea, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, GNA and the managing director of Media Majique.
In his speech, he encouraged the youth not to focus on finance as the main form of drawback to start their own business.
The two days event which started on Friday 12th September to Saturday 13thSeptember 2014 was organized with the theme “creating the next generation of leaders; The role of the students’ leader. The forum mounted great speakers such as Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwah, Deputy Minister for Education, Mr. Moro Awudu, the General manager of XYZ radio, Hon. Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, Deputy Minister for Trade and industry, Mr. George Andah, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN, Ghana, and some great business Men in Ghana.
Speaking with the Executive Director of the LEED forum, Ms. Rebecca Donkor, she said the event was organized to train students’ leaders as LEED has people who have climbed the corporate and political ladder to groom the students’ leaders with the required skills for the future as well as give them the opportunity to do presentations on their current challenges on campus in order to elicit policy formulation. “All students’ leaders should join the events of LEED to be equipped with the leadership skills needed in future”, she added.
Ms. Donkor outlined some of the upcoming programs of the LEED forum;a two day entrepreneur event in which there will be presentations on business proposal by students and aspiring young entrepreneurs; and those who come out best will be financed to start their own business.
She addressed some of the shortcomings in students’ leaderships in Ghana as financial management and investment. This tends out to be weaknesses of students’ leaders. Students’ leaders misuse funds given to them instead of investing and making wise use of them. Another pitfall in students’ leadership is time management as they show no consciousness for time, she added.
Some of the schools present during the event were University of Ghana, Zenith College, Islamic University, KAAF, Wisconsin University, All Nations University, Methodist University, Radford University, Wa Poly, International Students Association of Ghana, School of tourism and hotel management and many more.
She finally urged all youths to change their attitudes and perceptions about entrepreneurship and do more of action rather than talking as the youth talk more than taking actions, hence try their very best to ‘’walk the talk’’ in order to build a better Ghana.

Speaking with Mr. Reginald Laryea, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, GNA and the managing director of Media Majique, he said most youths have lost confidence in starting their own businesses due to the lack of capital and funding which is ruining entrepreneurship in Ghana. Capital is a secondary thing as knowledge and skills to manage businesses are the key resources needed to start one’s businesses, he added.
He told B&LG that there are people who are willing to finance businesses as far as they are lucrative and have convincing proposals, hence, the youth should be bold to dream big and start their own businesses. He urged the youth to make use of the internet as it gives adequate information on entrepreneurship issues, business proposals and life experiences of great business tycoon so as to learn from it.
He urged all young entrepreneurs to try venture capital as it is easier to get funding and also starting a business involve a huge risk as going for a loan may not be appropriate. The youth should not let capital discourage them from starting their own business as it has nothing to do with their entrepreneurial ability, he added.

The Head of Marketing/Operations of Wealth Vision Financial services Ltd, Mr. John Desmond Nai told B&LG news that, LEED forum helps unleash the youth talent in students’ leaderships and also shapes the future leaders as most of the leaders in Ghana are not leaders the country can be proud of.
He urged the youth to be ready to start from somewhere by knowing yourself and your aspirations before thinking of getting to the highest level as most great people always start on a low note with a lot of sacrifices before getting to where they are now.

He advised the youth to be humble and start from somewhere to make impact in the country. The youth should get up to the battle and do something in the country, he added.
