His
Excellency John Dramani Mahama, revealed to the public his inability to change
the board members of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), during the 2016
Presidential encounter, even though the state broadcasting corporation is going
through bumpy periods.
The assertion was made as a response
from the audience questions on how he can transform GBC. He said the
corporation is under the auspices of the national media commission, hence the
commission solely has the mandate to appoint and disappoint board members as
GBC is an independent entity, even though employees are paid from tax payers’
monies. He further noted that, he can only suggest to the media commission but
cannot interfere in its activities. He posited that, he will urge the media
commission to investigate into the poor working conditions and salaries of GBC
workers as it is affecting the performance of the corporation.
As a
solution to the unemployment issue in the disabled community, he maintained
that, there is going to be tax incentives for organizations that will employ
disabled people. He added that, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has taken the
initiative to train 5000 disabled people in any profession of their choice in
order to equip them for the job market and withstand job competitions. He
continued by adding that, as a provision for education, a student loan PLUS has been created to support admission fees for
students to enable them gain admissions without financial constraints.
He finally
thanked Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve, and reposed that the economy is
moving in the right direction as indicated by the human resource development
index. “The country is experiencing low mortality rate as a result of the
infrastructural development in the health and education sector”, he revealed.
