Marina Mall Summoned over Workers’ SSNIT Payments

Story by Addotey Michael

One of the fastest detonative shopping malls in Ghana, Marina Mall has been summoned to appear before the law court of Ghana this November by the SSNIT authorities for allegedly refusing to pay some of its workers’ SSNIT contributions since its operations in Ghana.
The Lebanese – owned shopping mall which was officially opened in 2012 has been gripped by the law for allegedly failing to pay the SSNIT contributions for the alleged electrical and maintenance department’s workers for the past years of its operations in Ghana which is undeniably against the Labour Act 2003, Act 651 of Ghana.
Speaking with some of the alleged electrical and maintenance department’s workers (names withheld), they said their SSNIT payment has never been paid since the inception of the mall’s operation as they have been complaining bitterly to the management to initiate the SSNIT registrations and its payments but no action has been taken.
Speaking with BLG news, the head of accounts departments, Mr. Commey said the alleged electrical and maintenance department has been outsourced to an independent contractor making it contract for service rather than contract of service as they have not also been giving any appointment letter henceforth no employment relationship between marina mall and the said department.
According to Mr. Commey, he believes that some of the workers from the electrical and maintenance department allegedly reported the issue to SSNIT officials who came to the mall to investigate but found no evidence of it since no one was willing to talk to him.
Speaking to the SSNIT official, the issue was reported to them by some of the workers whose identities cannot be disclosed due to their employment nature as Marina Mall has refused to initiate actions for their SSNIT payment. “A summoned letter was henceforth issued to the Mall inviting Mr. Eli Sarkis, the MD. Of the mall to appear before the law court and justify their actions this November, he revealed.
Business and Labour Guide promise readers a keen follow up on this case till the final court proceedings is adjudged and will never allow labour injustices prevail in the country without the law taking it place. “Keeping reading Business and Labour Guide for more updates on Labour issues in the country, – Advocating Labour Justices for the nation”.
