Story by Mary Caroline Atangah
Beggars we all
know are people who are normally disable or physically challenge people who are
unable to work due to their condition and have to beg for a living but has now
become a job in Ghana.
In recent days, begging has become a business for
both the physically challenged and the young, energetic and able youth. It is
now called survival of the fitters as the young men and women struggle with the
disabled to get daily bread.
Speaking to Mr. Daniel Akoto, a resident from
Teshie, he told BLG news that this circumstances happens as a result of the bad
economy, hardship and high unemployment rate in the country. “ The youths are
very lazy this days and those with jobs too are not satisfied with how much
they earn which as a result of that some jump to the street to beg for more”, he explained.
According to Mr. Akoto, the beggars who claim to
make a living out of begging make statement like “I am a pastor from kasoa, and
I came for a church program and am short of money please can you get me kasoa
fare” or “I am from Kumasi I came to Accra to do something and my wallet has
been stolen please can you help me get back home and God will richly bless you”
and so on.
Some of these beggars have taken this disgraceful
act as their full time job going up and down all day begging for money from one
person to another either on street, lorry stations and market places.
Finally Mr. Akoto, urge the public to be cautious of
such acts as the young, energetic and
able youth who are on the street fighting with the physically challenged people
should not be given anything when begging and by so doing, it will encourage
them to engage their energy into more productive jobs in Ghana.
