CHILD LABOUR BACK FIRES GHANA ECONOMY

Story by Mary Caroline Atangah
The capital city of Ghana, Accra, experiences a huge rate of child labour problems thereby forcing innocent little children to suffer in the street in the quest of making a living as a result of high rural – urban drift in the Ghana.
Speaking to Mr. Amofa Theophelious he told BLG news that the children who have been deprive of education are being forced to sell on the street, henceforth their parents should be traced by authorities to question them of such irresponsible act to of forcing children to feed the entire family.
Mr. Amofa said that some of these children parent do not bother to work but rather sit at home to relax and rest whiles their children move up and down in the street to sell even though some are orphans and have to make ends means. “Authorities should ensure that any parent into this unlawful will be dealt with according to the law as there are even no proper systems to check the law in Ghana, he exclaimed”.
Mrs. Nadia Adjei, a social welfare organizer, told BLG news that the children are Ghana’s future and do not have to treat them anyhow as she really feel very sad to see children being forced to exchange classroom with the street. “My most trepidation is that some of these children even die during this act and a time most of them ran into the street due to maltreatment from guardians and parents, she revealed”.
Finally she urged authorities to ensure that the street is free from child labour as it shrinks the economy in the long run since the street occupied the future leaders instead of the classroom. “The ministry of gender and social welfare have to tighten its policies and strategies in curbing child labour as its on the rise and have adverse effects on the economy, she pleaded”.
